About This Game

Better to rule in Hell, than serve one more day in the British Government!’ - Milton, Paradise Lost

Play as 19 year old Matthew Gregory Lewis who just wants to write queer satanic pulp horror, and sneaks away from his family each morning to pen Gothick fancy. Ashamed of his fixations, Father buys him a seat in Government through bribery, making him the MP of Hindon (voting population: 3). Forced to be a Tory MP against his will, young Matthew will do anything he can to find a way to get kicked out of Government. Considering the corruption of a party who will cover up his every move, that is a lot easier than it sounds. Race against Big Ben to try and get removed from office as soon as possible - and maybe, just maybe finish that novel you’ve been too afraid to show anyone.

Replayability and time loop

Matthew has one day in Parliament to try and get kicked out. Parliament of Hell features open-ended world exploration, with many short quest attempts to get Matthew out of Parliament. Each day, you play a session in the House of Commons (morning), House of Lords (afternoon), and the Westminster Bar (evening), and each action expends time.

Help Earl Grey invent his namesake tea, try too hard to get a date with Lord Byron, stop the Napoleonic Wars, drink enough HP sauce to hallucinate, and perhaps even summon Lucifer himself. For you may need to resort to your knowledge of the Gothick occult to escape your fate.

Based off an unbelievable true story

In 1796, during the infamous Parliament of Mad King George, 19 year old Matthew Gregory Lewis was expelled from Parliament for the moral injury and overnight sensation caused by the publication of The Monk, now known as a foundational work of Gothic horror. Our Game Director, BAFTA/Nebula winning narrative designer Baudelaire Welch, conducted extensive archival research on Lewis during their studies and uncovered more explicitly queer writing than was known before. Most notably his dates with Lord Byron, and how abysmally they went. This is the tale of a forgotten LGBT+ figure, told by the only person alive who has read his complete works. A man who had an uncompromising joy in writing trashy pulp, and his emancipatory philosophy behind it.
